Prologue:
~year 2031; 7 years later. 5 May, 11:00 A.M.~
There's a piece of paper on my bed; a letter? I pick it up and look at it, it's indeed a letter and it's written to me, that's for the first time since years! I can feel my heartbeat rising quick.
I look around but there's no one watching me, spying on me. I sign in relief and begin to read the letter, holding it tight with my right hand, afraid it can slip out of my hand and blow away every single second.
The first words I read are disturbing because I already have a slight feeling it's someone I've had a fight with. But as soon as I read the letter, I read through it quickly. Before I know it I already have read the full letter without taking a single breath.
Mustafa,
I finally had the courage to read the letter you sent me after those long years. You have to know that mother and I already have forgiven you, though you still won't be trusted. This might sound a bit of confusing. And it also might sound a bit harsh what I'm telling you and maybe it is, but of course you might understand it. Everything you've done to us, we won't forget it that easily…
But, I do have some good news, too. I just heard you're being released next week, which means you will be able to go home. And with 'go home' I mean come back to us.
Actually I told our mother I didn't want you to come back home and live with us again but she insisted, and I guess I just had to accept it. But I guess mother did it because she knew she would become ill… I don't know what's wrong with her and I wanted to take care of her but I found out I couldn't do it all myself. I need your help, mother counts on us to take care of her and heal her.
You can come live with us again but only if you accept these rules. Most important rule is that you're back with us to take care of mother, not because we accepted you back, we're still not ready for that. And of course, don't do anything stupid!
If we find out you're doing such things again as you did before, doesn't matter what, mother and I will put you back on the street or call the police. So don't you dare to do anything stupid again!
But alright, I guess I will have to trust you for one last time…
Hope to see you soon again,
Jeamesero.
A long letter, it doesn't seem all that bad. I actually feel pretty good about reading this. Alright, they don't accept me again that easy but that my brother needs my help with taking care of our mother does have to mean something, right?
I lay the letter under my pillow and realize how hungry I am; my stomach is grumbling badly.
Zeleb went to the prison's canteen earlier this morning, maybe I should meet him there. We could eat together and talk a bit more.
I smile by the thought and walk to the steel bars of my prison cell, waiting for a guard to pass by. Just at that moment a guard walks through the corridor, he has short blond hair, a small beard and blue eyes with some darker blue around the edges. From the first day I met this guard I knew I could trust him; he has always been nice to me and never truly punished me for anything. Well, of course he punished me, but not as bad as he punished the other prisoners.
He looks at me and smiles, I smile back. He walks over to me and now I can see he has a plastic soup bowl holding in his hand. He stops in front of the bars that block me from the corridor, he hands me over the soup. I want to say no, still I take from him and look at it; it's pumpkin soup, something I've tasted once before but I can't remember what it tasted like at all.
''Why you give me your soup?'', I ask, but I already know the answer; it's obvious he knows what I'm thinking.
''Well, I saw you were hungry so I thought to myself: why not give him my breakfast? It's not much but it's better than nothing.'', the guard says and I grin.
''True, true.'', I say and I grab the small plastic spoon, start stirring the soup. ''Though I really wanted to go to the canteen. Zeleb's there, too and I thought we could talk a bit more.''
''Oh yeah, your cellmate, right?'', the guard asks and I nod, the guard holds something else in his other hand and gets closer to the bars. He opens the lock and the cell door opens, he beckons me and I get out of the cell. He pats me on the shoulder and says: ''Don't tell them I let you out, I might get in trouble because they told you to get out of your cell at another time.''
''I won't, I promise.'', I say and the guard smiles. He stops patting my shoulder and points down the corridor.
''Go to your cellmate at the canteen, have fun talking to him and the others and make sure to eat something, I can hear your stomach grumble from meters of distance.'', the man says and he winks at me. I grin and give him his pumpkin soup back, giving him one strong pat on his shoulder. I walk off.
I now realize how little I know this guy. I know what he looks like, that he's a guard here and that he's pretty nice to the prisoners, but I never got to know his name. But of course it would be stupid to ask him his name right now, I will just go to the canteen and find Zeleb.
